Roofs, one of the most eye catching and useful parts of a house. They protect people from weather damages, insulate the top floor and attic, and determine how much your house would cost if put on the market. But because they are exposed to the outside, it is easy for them to be damaged after particularly bad weather or just become old. Here are some tips you need to know when it comes to roofing.
1. If you see water dripping on from the ceiling, replace your roof.
Usually when you see streaks of watermarks on your ceiling, it generally means that the
roof has a leak in it and needs to be replaced. Look around the general area of the leak where the roof is and check for any openings. If there is some sort of weakening in the shingles or a hole in it, then it is time to get a new roof.
2. Watch for animals in the house.
Chipmunks, squirrels, and the like love a nice, cozy, and comfortable place to live in. Unfortunately that place can be the inside of the house. If you hear any strange noises coming from above, investigate it. Normally if animals somehow get into your house, that means there is a hole big enough for them in the roof. If there are pests, remove them and then find that hole in the roof. It most likely needs to be replaced.
3. Curling shingles mean that you need to replace your roof.
Shingles are usually straight and flat as a board, overlapping one another to provide protection from the elements. If you look outside and see evidence of it curling, then it needs to be replaced.
Shingle curling means that the roof has faced several damages, whether it be on the inside from improper ventilation or outside through weather. Either way, if the problem persists, then you might end up with missing shingles.
4. Do not, under any circumstances, add new shingles on top of your old ones.
While people have done this widely in the past, in the end it only stalls the problem for a short amount of time. Most likely the problem will persist even after it has been “fixed.” Eventually those shingles, too, will be damaged and you will end up in an even worse situation than before, with extra shingles being improperly placed and falling off the roof. Placing new shingles on top of the old also damages them much quicker than one would expect. If you believe you need to replace the shingles, replace the whole roof.
5. Do not pick roofing companies that are very cheap.
While it may seem tempting to choose the cheapest ones possible, there might be a reason why they are so cheap. Perhaps they do not have insurance, perhaps they are not highly recommended by the locals in the Fairfax area. Or perhaps they have had problems installing new roofing in the past. Either way, when choosing a company to install roofing, make sure that they are credible and insured. This does not mean you should not be able to pick someone who is cheap. Rather, be careful of who you choose, for the quality of the work is more important than the price, though low prices do not hurt.
